Overview

When you know you need some user feedback, Helio’s test creation page gives you a variety of options to start setting up your surveys and usability tests. Jump into one of our survey Templates, or use our variety of question types to set up completely custom tests.

There are 7 parts to Helio’s test creation page:

  • Audience
  • Intro
  • Question Selection
  • Media Library
  • Outro
  • Jump-To Menu

Test Information

This is where you can get the housekeeping out of the way early. Give your test a clear name and add any tags that might help your team members search for this test in the future. To add a tag, type in the label of the tag you want to create, and then press Enter.

Assign to Project allows you to shift tests around in your account for simple organization purposes. By default, the test will always be assigned to the most recent project that you created a test in.

The Language dropdown lets you change the language of the actions and help text within the survey (“Continue”, “Play video with sound”, “Select up to 3 options”, etc.). Note: changing the language will not change the language the questions are written in throughout the survey.

Finally, you’ll get a view of what demographics will be available to segment by in the data report view. All 4 boxes are checked by default (the more data, the merrier!), though if you’re testing within a static demographic (i.e. only 25 year olds), you can uncheck them within this test creation page.


Audience Selection

Possibly the easiest part of the test creation process, but certainly the most important! Choose from Our Participants or Your Participants when setting up a test. It’s as easy as a check-box click, and you’re on your way.

When selecting testing devices, you can decide what environments participants should be able to take your test in. If you’re getting feedback on a mobile onboarding flow, uncheck the desktop and tablet boxes, and the survey will only be sent to participants who are using their mobile phones. Note: participants are given the option to transfer the survey link to their mobile if they attempt to access it from another device.

Wrap things up by setting your number of desired responses (we recommend a minimum of 100 responses for professional audiences and 200 for consumer groups, when possible). Don’t forget to save!


Intro

Intros are a great place to set context for your participants and put them in the proper mindset before presenting your questions. We provide a default template (seen in the image above), though you’re free to write as much as you want to open up your survey.

Note: try not to include any information in the intro that might influence how participants think about the upcoming questions. For instance, explaining that you’ll be showing a web page that advertises an award winning product, and then asking participants for their opinion on the quality of the product.


Question Selection

Choose from up to 12 different question types in Helio. The current question limit for Pro level accounts is 10 per survey, while Enterprise accounts have access for up to 20. Use follow-up questions to extend your question count and gather key qualitative information!

Follow-ups

On most question types in Helio (excluding free response), you can use follow-ups to gather written feedback from participants to help explain their quantitative reactions. Select the Advanced Options toggle at the bottom of the question card, and choose whether you would like your follow-up question required or not.

Note: Unless it is imperative that you get written feedback from each participant, we recommend keeping the follow-up optional so as to surface the most insightful responses from passionate participants and avoid vague explanations that produce less value.

Branching logic

Customize your surveys and determine what pathways you want participants to follow based on their previous answers. Branching logic can be used on all questions in Helio, excluding multi-select multiple-choice questions.

Question set-up

On each test card, there is a variety of small features that help refine your test experience:

  • Randomize Order – all multi-select questions on Helio are randomized by default. Uncheck this box if you want to present answer options in pre-selected order.
  • Selection Limit – turn this toggle off to give participants the option to select from all your multi-choice answers, or raise the answer limit to understand the top selections out of all choices.
  • Skip question introduction – the Helio test taking flow first introduces the question itself, and then asks participants to continue forward into the question to provide their answer. To take participants directly from question to question, such as when following a flow of click screens, you can remove the introduction phase altogether.
  • Media Library – add an image, audio, or video clip to your question for feedback on a visual asset.

Media Library

Helio supports the upload of several different visual assets, including static images, videos, audio and gifs. We offer the Media Library in the test creation flow to take your asset organization to the next level!

 

This asset library allows you to retain, rename, and search for visual assets you have previous uploaded and saved into Helio. Use the tabs to the left toggle between the assets during your search, or use the dropdown on the right to filter by recent uploads or alphabetical order. The dropdown at the top lets you change between projects in your account so that you can select visual assets from anywhere as you need.


Outro

Similar to the intro message, Helio provides default farewell text to round out your survey. You can also use the Redirect feature in the outro card to send participants directly to a specific URL after the survey. This is great when testing with your own participants to send them to a necessary follow-up location, or even as a marketing opportunity with a consumer audience.


Jump To Menu

One of the key features of the test creation page is always available in the left hand sidebar. Use this sidebar menu to auto scroll to different parts of your survey. This is also where you can rearrange the questions in your survey by clicking and dragging the question cards into place within the jump to menu.
