The Current State of Remote Work 💬

The age of remote work is upon us, and now more than ever we are seeing the power of having tools that enable us to create impact from the comfort of our homes.

To gain a better idea of the impact that remote work is currently having on our industry, we surveyed our audience of Tech Professionals to understand their struggles and solutions for collaborating remotely:

• New vs. Experienced Remote Workers. Those of us who aren’t used to working from home will likely have very different experiences from those who are remote work experts, so we used Helio’s Branching Logic to get isolated feedback from both of these groups. Turns out, those who have regularly worked from home were more detailed in laying out their struggles as they’ve had more time to recognize and work through these issues.
• Where’d the time go? You might think that being stuck at home all day would mean you have all the time in the world, but it turns out that time management is one of the most difficult aspects of remote work for everyone. When comparing our two different segments, we found that our experienced remote workers are frustrated they aren’t able to convey the same level of detail with their team, while those new to working from home have seen a noticeable lack in motivation. If only our problems could all be as simple as this participant: “Honestly, my butt hurts. The best thing my company could do for me is a small stipend towards a good office chair.”
• It’s Zoom’s world, we’re just living in it. When asked what tools teams are using to collaborate effectively while working remotely, Zoom was by far the most common answer, with nearly a third of our participants mentioning the application directly by name. Skype (12%) and various Google products (10%) were also popular answers, and as this participant jokes, we can’t forget our other favorite tools: “The only platform I am using is YouTube.” Feel free to poke through their answers and see what other interesting products people are putting to use!

We’ve got the tools to make it work, and as we continue to work remotely, we’ll begin to develop new patterns and practices that help us be efficient in ways that we couldn’t see before!
