Helio Audiences give you the power to connect with the consumers or professionals that interact with your company everyday.
Go to the Audience page in the top nav of your Helio account to see the participants you can test with.
Helio’s participant community now consists of over 500,000 individuals who are eager to provide your company with feedback.
Note: Helio participants aren’t professional testers; they are individuals willing to give you a moment of their time, and they are awarded with micro-payments as a small “thank you” for their time and effort.
There are three ways you can tap into Our Participants. In a Pro account, you have access to a Basic Audience of Helio participants and a Targeted Audience of Helio participants. In an Enterprise account, you also have access to Advanced Audiences.
Basic Audiences provide you with a random sample of participants from our community, and are great for high volume surveys with widespread consumer products or ideas. Test with 200, 500, or even 1,000 participants to get the volume of feedback you need!
Use the “Create Test” action on your Audience page to begin creating a test with Basic Audience, or choose “Basic” from the audience options on the test creation page.
Targeted Helio Participants
Targeted Audiences allow you to target participants based on their geographic and demographic information. The 5 types of demographics you can target are:
Location will depend on the amount of participants you want to gather feedback from. The majority of Helio’s participants reside in North America, with strong communities in Europe, South Asia, and South America as well. If you are in need of a more specific geographic region, we may be able to target them with an Advanced Audience.
Gender will allow you to target your participants based on whether they self-identified as male or female. We can also source non-binary participants through an Advanced Audience.
Age will provide you with targeting of groups between the ages of 13-17, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, and 65+.
Education allows targeting based on 4 education levels: Less than High School, High School Graduate, College Graduate, and Postgraduate.
Income provides 3 general buckets for targeting: under $40k USD per year, $40k to $100k per year, and more than $100k per year. If you need to get more specific, we can target a narrower range of income with an Advanced Audience.
Use the “Create Test” action on your Audience page to begin creating a test with targeted Helio participants, or choose “Targeted” from the audience options on the test creation page.
If you have selected too many targeting criteria, Helio will provide an error message that lets you know we don’t have enough participants in that specific demographic to fulfill your request.
With an Enterprise account, our Helio Advocates work with your team to build Advanced Audiences that are targeted based participants’ behaviors, responsibilities, and preferences.
Advanced Audiences that you currently have access to can be found above the general Helio participants on the Audience page.
Note: Advanced Audiences that are still being prepared for you will show as “Audience Building” on the right hand side.
After an Advanced Audience has been added to your account, use the “Create Test” action to begin creating a test with that group, or check the “Use more than one audience” option in the top right corner to select multiple audiences that you would like to test with.
You can also choose “Advanced” from the audience selection options on a test you have already begun.
Below your active audiences, you will also find recommended audiences that can be attached to your account for testing. Click “Add Audience” to reach out to our team about getting one of these audiences prepared.
On top of our recommended audiences, we can source for completely unique groups based on new attributes that you bring to the table. If you don’t see an audience that you need, you can request an audience by reaching out to the Helio team. Check out our audience build process, and feel free to reach out to learn what Advanced Audiences we can put you in touch with!
Note: Recommended Audiences are available for immediate use once they are connected to your account. Requested Audiences will require an audience build session to determine when the audience will be ready for use.
When you need to get feedback from your own group of participants, or need to start building a list of users to test with, there are several ways Helio can support that feedback loop.
Open Audiences provide you with a link that can be sent our to your participants in any way. Set up and launch a test with an Open Audience to get your share link, then drop it in a message blast, social post, email chain, or where ever your team needs.
Note: Open Audiences simply provide you with quick access to your own audience, without providing identifying information on any single participant.
Use the “Create Test” action on your Audience page to begin creating a test with a shareable link, or choose “Open” from the audience options on a test you have already begun. Enterprise accounts are able to unlock up to 500 open audience responses for free!
Lists work great if you need an organized group of participants that you can track over time. If you have a participant group ready to go, the “Add List” action on the Audience page will take you to the List page, where you can use a CSV to drop your participant list into Helio.
Once you have a List ready on your account, you can use the “Create Test” action next to any list on the Audience page, or select “Your Lists” on the test creation page.
Lists can also be used to recruit panelists if you do not have a participant group prepared. Reach out to our team to learn more about how to use our List features to recruit an audience of your own participants!
Intercept surveys allow you to embed a Helio survey onto your platform so that you can collect participants’ feedback in real time. Click the “Add Intercept” button on the Audience page to go to the intercept creation page and request this new feature to be added to your account. Once you have Intercepts connected to your account, check out our Help Center article on how to build and use Intercepts!
If you already have an intercept set up, you can create a survey with an intercept using the “Create Test” action on the Audience page, or by selecting “Your Intercepts” on the test creation page.
Note: Each intercept option in the test creation page will tell you what brand style it is connected to and how many targeting rules are connected to that intercept.
Screeners can be used to recruit a list of your own participants that you can test with through Helio. Ask about our List feature to learn how to use Screeners, and use the “Add Screener” button on the Audience page to reach out to our team about getting a Screener set up in your account.
Integrations will allow you to connect your company’s CRM to Helio so that you can directly tap into your customer & client lists for testing. Use the “Add Integration” button on the Audience page to reach out to our team and let us know what platforms your team would like to integrate with Helio!
Helio audiences give you the power to connect with the consumers or professionals that interact with your company everyday.
Advanced Audiences are built with specific behaviors, responsibilities, and preferences in mind. On top of demographic targeting, we can source for completely unique audiences based on new attributes that you bring to the table.
Reach out to a Helio representative to ask about advanced audiences or to start the audience build process. Some audiences we have already sourced for and can put you in touch with immediately, while others that are newly targeted may take up to 2 weeks to be ready for testing.
Audience Build Process
Your team and a Helio advocate will work through an audience builder Google sheet to gain alignment on what participants you want to test with.
There are three ways to start an audience builder sheet:
An audience build session, in which a Helio advocate will hop on a call with you to work through the details of your audience. These sessions typically last 15-30 minutes.
Use an existing audience builder sheet to share a new audience with your advocate. If you have already been through an audience build session and have access to your team’s current audience builder sheet, you can create a new “Attributes” tab on that sheet and enter the attributes of the new group you would like to target. You can email the link to this sheet to your advocate, and they will provide an update on the audience build process within 2 business days.
Email us your audience information, including any relevant titles, responsibilities, or demographic restrictions. If you’re pressed for time and can’t hop on a call, this can be the fastest way to quickly get an audience build process started.
Audience build sheet
The audience build process starts off by identifying all of the attributes that make up different participants that you want to test with. In an audience build session, you and your advocate will work through identifying these attributes together and adding them to the audience builder.
There are 4 primary types of attributes you may want to target: Identity, Demographics, Psychographics, and Behaviors.
Identity attributes are used to understand the terms and professions used to describe your target audience.
Titles are the specific job positions that participants in your audience may hold.
Achievements are used to target groups that share certain accomplishments, such as gaining a teaching credential or account certification.
Industries allow you to focus on specific verticals and compare across them.
Possessions help identify the necessities of your audience, like owning a computer as a software engineer or having worker’s comp insurance as a business owner.
Demographic attributes ensure that your audience exists in the markets that your team is targeting.
Demographics such as age, gender, education, and annual income.
Geographics to target specific locations like Canada, or all North American countries.
Psychographic attributes work great to identify participants who have similar tendencies but don’t fall under general titles or achievements.
Preference is great for targeting participants based on their wants and needs.
Activity allows you to zero in on those participants who share day-to-day behaviors.
Behavior attributes, like psychographics, can be the core of your audience and allow you to target individuals regardless of their titles.
Accountability lets you target participants based on the responsibilities that they have, either in their professional or personal lives.
Ability, similar to achievements, allows you to identify participants based on their experience and what they can accomplish.
Once the Attributes tab has been filled out, your advocate will take that information and begin using those attributes in the Segment tab of your audience build sheet.
Segments are the building blocks of Helio audiences, and they are made up of the attributes you have already identified. Helio advocates craft segments based on the groups that can be targeted through Helio’s systems, and uses these segments to build the audiences that you will test with.
There are three components to each segment: a base attributes, a refining attribute, and a market attribute.
Base attributes are the anchor of a segment, and represent a trait that all participants in that segment have.
Refining attributes are used to identify different types of participants that might still be represented by that segment.
Market attributes represent the shared demographics or geographics that each member of the segment will share.
Once an advocate has set up the segments, those segments will be used as the building block for your overall audiences. Audiences can be made up of one or more segments, and will be titled the same in the audience builder as they will appear on your Helio account.
The definition of your audience will be broken up into the following sections:
Segments that make up the audience.
Panel size will show the current amount of participants available in that audience. If the audience is still being built, this section will show as “TBD”. If you have an old audience builder sheet, please reach out to an advocate to have them update the panel size if needed.
Audience type will indicate what type of Our Participants you are tapping into. Typically, this will indicate an Advanced Audience.
Market size will be provided to give you an idea of that overall statistical relevance of your panel size.
Recruitment displays that method in which the participants in this audience was reached. Typically, this will indicated that the participants were reached though ZURB’s panelist community, Enroll.
Psychographics are used to give you an idea of the most important attributes connected to this audience.
Behaviors are used to reflect the shared tendencies of any one of the participants in the audience.
Demographics indicate specific targeting criteria other than behavioral attributes.
After establishing attributes, your advocate will deliver a completed audience builder sheet to you within 2 business days.
Using an Advanced Audience
Once an Advanced Audience has been connected to your account, you can begin testing with one by clicking “Create Test” on the Audience page, or selecting Advanced on the test creation page.
On the test creation page, Advanced Audiences that have been created for you will appear as a name and description that will align with the targeting criteria you have established with your advocate.
Simply select the checkbox for the audience you would like to use, and decide what devices you would like participants to take your test on. Adjust the amount of participants you’d like to gather feedback from, and then save the audience to continue creating your testing.
